Logela. The Tales of the Floating Walls

The inspiration for this project came from an interest in merging Performance Art and Fashion - and how Performative methodologies could affect the creative process of a ‘fashion project’. Thus this project ended up being an interpretation and exploration of f

ive emotions associated with the bedroom - (Logela is the Basque term for bedroom). I made a questionnaire on Instagram asking people what concepts would come to their mind when thinking of their bedroom - and it resulted in these five concepts: fear, roots, refuge, creativity and self-discovery. These concepts are interpreted as ‘tales’ in this project and for my graduation project, I decided to work with Fear and Self-Discovery - to exemplify two very different ways to work with Performance Art. Each piece explores different areas of this artistic expression, after having studied the cases of Yoko Ono, The Gutai, Pina Bausch and Marina Abramovic.

In the Fear tale, I asked 7 different people to manifest and perform their fears on two pieces of cloth (Fear pieces 1 & 2) through their art, following specific instructions that I designed for the piece. Thereby we created a cross-directional template for us to work with, losing control in specific parts of the process. Once these pieces were ready, I invited the audience to reflect on my fear of silence and loneliness, through a 10-hour isolation-live stream. Both the space and the ‘fear pieces’ created the frame for the creative process - and acted as a mirror of these universal sensations.

For the tale of Self-Discovery, I wanted the illustrations that I did, in my bedroom, during the beginning of the lockdown to be the starting point of the process. It is important to note that the design of these garments was guided by the expression that the performers should manifest in the final Performance Piece - this is why there is not a strict cohesion between the garments as there would be in a conventional fashion collection. During my exam, I asked the performers to perform with my designs in relation to what the term self-discovery meant to them - they would then layer their clothes on my body. This ‘ritual’ created a new shape and expression to all the garments, in a haptic exploration of my designs through Performance Art.
