‘IKIPALIN’ is inspired by a tribe living deep in the Indonesian jungle, whose women have some of their fingers amputated after the death of a loved one.
The ritual is meant to scare away the spirits, thinking that feeling physical pain in addition to grief will help the soul to leave. The Indonesia
n ritual gives more attention to the sacrifices that people often make for one another.
To make the fingers we first had to create molds of our own fingers with alginate. Then we poured in some plaster and later on dyed the fingers red.
