F 50.0

The collection F 50.0 thematizes the Western world’s fetishization of the controlled female body, and the ambivalence we as a society have for this as a phenomenon. When does our constant dieting and perfecting of our appearance turn to obsession?

Today's ideal is not just to be thin, but to

...

be healthy - it's detox, "strong is the new skinny," and clean eating. We proclaim a lifestyle where the goal is to prove through our physical appearance that we are successful, but disguise this message with inclusive concepts such as public health and lifestyle change.

These messages are expressed commercially, but also medically and through government initiatives, and invite us to regard our bodies as negotiable ongoing projects that can be transformed into simple, even irresistible, communicable ideals.

Anorexia (F 50.0 Anorexia Nervosa) is the mental illness with the highest mortality rate. Outside of the strict criteria for being diagnosed with an eating disorder there are many people who practice obsessive dieting. Society does not romanticize starvation, but exalts the aesthetics and mechanisms of anorexia. We are healthy, sporty and hardworking, not starving, desperate and dying.

Society's obsession with the lean and controlled body ideal has gone so far as to infiltrate our everyday lives. In my collection I have tried to visualize this by reworking conventional garments. I've wanted to describe the desperation of wanting to fit in and be acceptable. Fighting against the demons in your mind telling you you can never be small enough.
