Abby Hollis joins Santosh Sankar to discuss creating sustainable supply chain systems, understanding human-centered logistics, and designing with speed and empathy.
My perspective on problem solving is informed by my understanding of traditional textiles as a universal language, common user interface, and exemplification of material stewardship. My focus is in user research, data visualization, and storytelling, although I am interested in the Design Thinking pr
ocess in its entirety as a tool for systems reform and behavior change. I assert that the textile field - like that of psychology, social science, and user experience - is a human behavior field.
My understanding of systems has been shaped by my experiences with artisan groups in India, Peru, and Northwest Arkansas. I have applied this understanding of systems through textiles to projects in various fields including education, logistics, and toy branding. In each project, I pride myself on my ability to make connections across fields, shaping new perspectives within teams. I employ a variety of modified design thinking tools but am quick to challenge traditional research and design methodology in favor of more contextually appropriate methodologies. My latest research methodologies include overheard conversations, memes generated by user communities, and art created to generate feedback.
I am currently developing Thread Threads, a digital archive of tactile experience, intended to inspire a more intimate relationship with cloth and greater material stewardship.
The SCADpro FutureLogistics Alliance consisted of mentors from industry leaders IBM, Great Dane, Georgia Ports Authority, and the Savannah Economic Development Authority. Ten SCAD students from five countries and six different disciplines collaborated during an unprecedented online quarter in the mid
st of the COVID 19 outbreak. Over the course of eight weeks, the team envisioned the future of logistics, a system by people for people.
Focus in user research, design strategy, and textile systems. Graduated Summa Cum Laude and School of Fashion Outstanding Academic Achievement Award.
