Döppel Studio

Eyes on Talents member, Döppel Studio presents the Layer collection, a dialogue between Paris and Tokyo born of a meeting between the studio and the Edo kumiko Tatematsu atelier. Together, they explore and reinterpret kumiko, a traditional wood-joining technique based on precision and repetition of gesture that creates a balance of finely openwork geometric patterns. During a residency in Tokyo in October 2024, the studio immersed itself in the world of this traditional craft, fascinated by its structural rigour as much as its graphic poetry. Döppel designed three patterns that became adaptable grids, which the Tatematsu atelier then interpreted and assembled into a kumiko grid. The result is a subdued, almost living light, in dialogue with the weave of the wood. A collection in which the Japanese heritage of kumiko blends with the contemporary language of Döppel Studio.
Paris-based Döppel Studio was founded by Lionel Dinis Salazar and Jonathan Omar in 2016. Since the start of their collaboration, the duo have shared a desire to question the object, its multiple meanings, its imaginaries, as well as its new sensorialities and possible diversions.
