Pixy Liao

Eyes on Talents member, Pixy Liao, is one of six artists in the photography exhibition, Hidden Stories, presented by Alisan Fine Arts in New York, until December 21. Among the other artists in the show, all storytellers, Pixy Liao has a more personal imagery, using her work as a means to explore and question existing gender roles, relationship dynamics, cultural traditions and expectations. No matter how subtle the portrayal, she exerts her gaze and always retains control. Many of her photographs are inspired by art history and the media, but they are just as often produced from her imagination. Although storytelling is inherent in her work, she takes care to leave the narrative open-ended, allowing the audience to fill in the gaps.
Born in Shanghai, China, Pixy Liao is now based in Brooklyn, New York. Her work, although highly personal, is often witty and humorous. Liao uses her photographs, video and installation to call into question stereotypical contemporary concepts such as the nature of ‘the couple’, ‘the artist’ and ‘the female experience’. Last year, she took part in the Elles x Paris Photo program, initiated with the French Ministry of Culture and supported by Kering Women In Motion.
