Jean-Baptiste Fastrez

Eyes on Talents member, Jean-Baptiste Fastrez, presented this year his first solo show at Galerie kreo, Paris. SPACE CRAFT introduces an ensemble of crafted mirrors, tables, stools and sideboards, featuring materials such as straw marquetry and new metallic finishes. By seamlessly merging traditional craftsmanship with a techno-futurist aesthetic, Jean-Baptiste Fastrez is designing pieces that reflect the aesthetics of our time and its contradictory desires: on the one hand, a return to the essentials and the desire to have a long-term vision; on the other, the revival of space conquest and the pursuit of innovation. For the designer, an object like the solar panel embodies this paradox. "Whether on a space station or on the roof of an eco-village," he explains, "the solar panel symbolizes both growth and decline, acceleration and slowdown. I accept its presence as a simple motif which, because it no longer produces electricity, encourages us to reflect on the contemporary world."
Jean-Baptiste Fastrez is a French designer born in 1984. After graduating from ENSCI, he went to work with Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec and opened his own studio in 2011. Jean-Baptiste Fastrez's practice is based on a constant study of the narrative power of objects and materials.
