As part of a research and design exhibition at Blythe House, of the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, one of the most iconic musical instruments of the 16th century in Puerto Rico; the güiro--a Latin American percussion instrument which often plays an important role in typical rhythm sections of ge
nres like cumbia and son-- was reimagined and designed.
The research was focused on musical instruments from the 16th century, archived at Blythe House. These instruments were often made from a variety of materials, both conventional and unconventional. Being influenced by the unconventional, organic material and sustainable practices were applied by using local plantain waste from Puerto Rico as the material source for design.
