ll control. This lack of qualitative controllability is the motivation for this thesis. A second driving force for this work lies in the relationship between typography and technology by raising the question about the future role of a designer working between algorithmic assistance and creative possibilities delivered by new technologies.

My Thesis is divided into 3 chapters – A) Type Design & Craft B) Typography & Technology. C) Space & Interface – while exploring the question of variability from the different scales, perspectives and disciplines.
The first chapter gives insight into Type Design practice done in the field of contextuality, parametrization and variation and how this can be linked to contemporary possibilities of dynamic typography.

The second chapter is looking into different tools of typesetting from analog to algorithmic by trying to solve the question why Typography on the web is still way behind. The third chapter is about the space that surrounds it. It is about the medium and the change from its static nature to a dynamic one and how this in turn puts the interaction between the designer and the user into a new relationship.
