Raphaela Haefliger is a Swiss graphic and type designer working across different fields of urban culture. Her work always follows a set of self-imposed conceptual rules, in belief that a clear framework helps creativity to unfold.
After having completed her BA Visual Communication at the University
of Lucerne she worked for Ludovic Balland as editorial designer. Since then typography, has become a faithful companion in her life. She went on to establish an independent practice by working on commissioned and self-initiated projects, still with a strong focus on typography. In 2016 she joined FREITAG lab. as Art Director. Working at FREITAG led her to establish a more comprehensive practice that includes research, conceptual thinking, a critical mind and thus the development of more sustainable design solutions.
In 2020, she decided to apply for the Master's degree in Type Design at ECAL, Ecole cantonale d'art de Lausanne, in order to specialise in what she calls "the core discipline of graphic design, the basic element on which everything is built". For her, type design combines two of her passions: her fascination for language and her enthusiasm for the technical component of design, always perceiving its limitations as a driving force.
At ECAL, she was offered the assistant position after graduation, which she will accepted with enthusiasm in September 2022.
