Installé près de Hualien, sur la côte est de Taïwan, le peuple aborigène Kavalan est expert dans l’utilisation de la fibre de bananier : ils en font leurs vêtements traditionnels. J’ai eu la chance de les rencontrer, de partager leur mode de vie et d’apprendre à leurs côtés la méthode anc
estrale du travail de cette plante.
La chair de bananier, résidu considérable de cette extraction traditionnelle, révèle à la lumière un graphisme fascinant. Par une technique particulière d’affinage, ce tissu végétal est stabilisé en une gamme colorée allant du blanc au brun foncé. Ce nouveau matériau est ici sublimé dans des formes de bambou cintré, inspirées de la structure du bananier.

Settled near Hualien, on the east coast of Taiwan, the Kavalan aboriginal tribe is expert in the use of banana fiber : they make it their traditional clothing. I had the chance to meet them, to share their way of life and to learn from their elders the ancestral techniques to use this plant.
The banana flesh, big waste from this traditional extraction, reveals a fascinating graphic in the light. By a particular refining technique, this plant tissue is stabilized in a color range from white to dark brown. This new material is sublimated here in curved bamboo shapes, inspired by the banana tree structure.
