“Made In Shanghai”

er brand fakes and fast-fashion. Garments have lost their value over time, and this especially stands out in China.

The protagonist of this collection is a modern Shanghai’s empress: she represents the past and the present. The collection is inspired by some of the historical clothing of the end of Chinese Qing-dynasty. The silhouettes and details come from the traditional clothing of the Manchu-tribe, and the prints and colors come from the portraits of the empress. The surfaces created with the plastic tinsels reflect modern Shanghai.

The tinsel used in the collection is cutting waste and dead stock from a Finnish Christmas ornament factory Weiste. The tinsel is sewn between a layer of fabric and tulle. In theory, it’s possible to use this technique to any shiny plastic waste. The result of the collection is shiny, but in a way, because it’s filled with plastic, it’s “fake valuable” - much like those street market designer copies the city of Shanghai drowns in.
