EVERYDAY FANTASY
With this project, I aim to create a series that focuses on identity in design and the story that clothing can help convey. I have been inspired by fashion within subcultures, particularly the Japanese cosplay culture. I want to base my work on this approach to clothing, as the focus

is not on following new trends, but rather on creating a community where play and imagination take center stage. My series is inspired by the movie Howl’s Moving Castle, a Japanese anime film from 2004, directed by Hayao Miyazaki. The film is my personal favorite, and it holds great nostalgic value for me. Therefore, I want my series to evoke the same relatable and recognizable feeling for the receiver. The film highlights contrasts between the dark and the idyllic while incorporating humor and magic. Additionally, the film presents a very feminine masculinity, which inspires me to shed light on this principle. My series lies between costume and clothing, and with this, it emphasizes the fantastical and playful universe that one can step into, even as an adult. We now live in a world where we are too busy for imagination, so I will attempt to create a community and a universe where magic and play are essential.
The series is built up by 5 different characters, all inspired by scenes from "Howl's Moving Castle". Working with individual characters helps create relation between the cosplay community and the series. It also creates a more clear translation from the film to real life.
