Laurids Gallée

Eyes on Talents member, Laurids Gallée, unveiled a new series of sculptural lights in collaboration with COLLECTIONAL at the inaugural Design Biennale Rotterdam in February. Presented as a solo exhibition within the Groot Handelsgebouw, the series titled Cairn is formed from large blocks of sculpted resin whose rounded forms reimagine the ancient symbolism of cairns. The way light is shaped within the object becomes the defining characteristic of each piece. As the resin transports the light in a certain direction, each angle from which the piece is viewed becomes completely different. In keeping with the biennale’s theme ‘What’s real is unfamiliar’, the designer wanted the exhibition to evoke a sense of wonder and curiosity. Between memory and perception, permanence and illusion, Gallée’s manipulation of material and light speaks to a future-facing craft, one rooted in storytelling and visual transformation.
