Charles Wollaston Award

Tracey Emin RA has won the 2024 Charles Wollaston Award for her work Did it Ever Get Any Better on view in the Summer Exhibition of the Royal Academy of Arts. Established in 1978 and presented to the "most distinguished work" in the exhibition, it is one of the most significant art prizes awarded in the UK. Tracey Emin's expressive and visceral work is renowned for its portrayal of personal experience and heightened states of emotion. Frank and intimate, yet universal in its relevance, her practice draws on the fundamental themes of desire and grief, unravelling the constructs of ‘woman’ and ‘self’.

Herbert Smith Freehills Portrait Award

England's National Portrait Gallery awarded the Herbert Smith Freehills Portrait Award to Antony Williams for his egg tempera portrait, Jacqueline with Still Life (2020). Born in 1964, Williams trained at Farnham College and Portsmouth University. He has shown works in the Portrait Award exhibition 11 times, placing third in 2017. His winning portrait was created using egg tempera, pigments bound with egg yolk, instead of more popular oil paints. As well as being impressed by Williams "confidence and mastery of the egg tempera medium", the jury said the composition "was nuanced and surprising".
