"Hawker Centres" are complexes of traditional, cheap restaurants where the majority of Singaporean people have lunch and dinner. These places are more than simple agglomerations of little restaurants: they provide a meeting point between Chinese, Malaysian and Indian cultures. During this one-week wo
rkshop we collaborated with the students of NUS (National University of Singapore) on a project investigating this phenomenon.
Our group decided to work on packaging: we selected three typical Singaporean dishes becoming less and less popular, and we re-styled their packaging. Popiah, Muah Chee, and Kuhe Tutu are three dry dishes, usually wrapped with a non-eco-friendly plastic packaging. We decided to convert the containers of these snacks into units of recycled paper, printed black and white, with colored stickers sealing the package. The patterns decorating each meal are inspired by the ingredients contained in the three different snacks.
