as the option to give back the old product so that there can be more of a closed-loop cycle and parts can be reused, biodegraded or recycled rather than sent to landfill.

This Spring/Summer 17 collection is called ‘Roots’ and is inspired by the designer’s Chinese heritage while also remaining true to the designer’s beliefs of a natural and sustainable lifestyle. Rather than taking inspiration from stereotypical Chinese motifs such as dragons and bright gold and red colours, the designs are based around ancient Chinese traditions- namely the practice of foot binding. This tradition is not being romanticised in this collection, but is used as an exploration to inform different binding and fastening techniques. As an antithesis to this practice, the brand endeavours to create footwear for women that is comfortable.

Research comes from Jo Farrel’s Living History photography project that captures the last remaining women in China with bound feet. Shapes and design detailing come from the slippers that Chinese women had to wear. The intricate embroidery is used as inspiration for design assembly and the pieces produced use a lot of hand work as a substitute for toxic glue adhesion.

The design aesthetic is classic footwear with a modern twist so that the footwear can be relevant today and also in the future. The brand’s footwear is aimed at a more practical consumer and has a stronger focus on flat footwear rather than extreme heels, although there are some fashion pieces for the more daring green consumer. This collection sees a contrast between dark and pastel colours to complement each other while also remaining neutral for practical purposes.
