Jasleen Kaur
Turner Prize
Jasleen Kaur received the Turner Prize 2024 for Alter Altar, her exhibition at Tramway in Glasgow. Kaur's work celebrates the Scottish Sikh community by transforming everyday objects into symbols of cultural memory and collective identity. Highlights include a red Ford Escort draped in a giant doily, automated worship bells, the quintessential Scottish soda, Irn-Bru and a self-playing accordion. The jury noted the considered way in which Kaur weaves together the personal, political and spiritual in her exhibition, choreographing a visual and aural experience that suggests both solidarity and joy.

Shu Okamoto
Vortic Art Prize
Shu Okamoto has won first place of the Vortic Art Prize at Untitled Art Miami Beach 2024. Okamoto is trained in traditional Japanese painting and showing with the Kyoto-based gallery Cohju. The artist delves into various aspects of Japanese painting, not only exploring traditional spatial compositions and methods of depiction but also examining materials and techniques, including the use of fusuma (sliding doors) and byōbu (folding screens). At times, he incorporates references to pop culture figures such as ghosts, jiangshi (hopping vampires) and zombies. Through this, Okamoto investigates the identity of Japanese painting and seeks to understand the potential of Japanese painting in contemporary times.
