Bridging the Gap Between Haptics and High Fashion
Traditional inclusive design often operates within a medicalized vacuum, prioritizing function while neglecting the wearer’s identity. This research proposes a shift toward Neuro-Aesthetic Luxury, where the garment acts as a functional interface betw
een the nervous system and a chaotic environment. By analyzing the intersection of Proprioception (the body's sense of self in space) and Haptic Perception (the sense of touch), we can transform textiles into tools for emotional and physiological regulation.
'Fidgetme' is a wristband that serves as an intimate and relaxing point of contact for people with sensory processing disorders. Because the wrists are high-sensitivity zones with thin skin and proximity to pulse points, they are ideal for "micro-regulations" throughout the day. For neurodivergent individuals, repetitive tactile input (stimming) is a critical self-regulatory behavior. Transitioning this from "toys" to "textiles" reduces social stigma.
Design Implementation: A reversible, modular sleeve.
The "Calm" Side: A seamless, flat-knit surface of Jasmine Fiber, designed to eliminate tactile "noise" for hyper-sensitive moments.
The "Active" Side: A gradient of 3D crochet stitches. The Waffle Stitch provides structural resistance for squishing, while the Popcorn Stitch offers high-relief focal points for active fidgeting.
Inclusive Feature: The wristband replaces the need for external fidget toys, allowing the user to self-soothe subtly during social or professional interactions. Magnetic closures integrated in between the crochet pattern of the band allow easy adjustments to the band size as compared to stretchy-traditional bands.
The strength of this research lies in its modular scalability. The Sensory Map developed for the wristband can be expanded to larger surface areas (such as a wrap around scarf or puffer jacket) to address different intensities of sensory need.
