The New Frontiers Of Awareness
Manuel_Manufactures is a creative design studio and consulting agency founded by Swiss/American fashion designer and artist Mariel Manuel.
A fashion graduate from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp, she has imagined concepts and materialized stories for Paris runway shows for almost a decade.
At the crossroads of textile, garment and sculpture, she crafts pieces in 3D, bringing to life stories for clients in fashion, textile, cinema and music. She also paints and illustrates.
She develops her singular language in textile and embroidery by reusing waste textiles with local craftspeople in Chennai, Southern India.
Mariel Manuel on residency in India and Sri Lanka.
A Swiss artist and fashion designer, Mariel Manuel works mainly by materializing ideas in 3D, on the body or in space, sometimes at the crossroads of sculpture and design.
“Ten dresses under my bed” is an ongoing research project by Manuel that ques
tions the values and use of textile, craftsmanship and the disposal of fabrics that produce waste. Through an extensive research and appropriation process, Manuel collects textiles from around the world and numerous found plastics and objects, combining them into what appear to resemble finely hand-worked cocktail dresses. Both geometric and organic, the dresses are presented as wall textiles that tell their own story in their own time.
During her three month residency, Mariel will be conducting workshops for designers at Bengaluru ByDesign, followed by a research visit to Sri Lanka where she will interact with students at https://www.aod.lk/ . The last leg of her residency will be in Delhi where she plans to research around sustainable design practices.
