Influenced by a wide variety of musical works, Basquiat asserted himself as a black artist on the artistic scene in the 1980s. Staging his public image, he became a veritable icon. The exhibition is constructed as a narrative revealing the extent of his musical inspirations, which are omnipresent in
his canvases. A guiding and narrative line runs through the entire exhibition and allows for a two-layered reading that combines works and references. The universe of the exhibition takes up the current codes of contemporary art and of the gallery in order to highlight the iconic status of the artist and his influence on today's society.
