STUDIO CATOIR - SARONNO DUPLEX, NEAR MILAN, ITALY –
The classic 1955 Cary Grant and Grace Kelly movie To Catch a Thief was one key point of inspiration for the design of this glamorous, crafted and colourful duplex apartment near Milan. Designed by Michael and Elisa Catoir of Studio Catoir, the
apartment is on the seventh and eighth floors of a new apartment building in Saronno, Northern Italy, with dramatic views of the Alps, including the Monte Rosa to the west and the mountains of the Engadin to the east.
The freshly completed apartment is the main residence of an Italian businessman and entrepreneur, who works in the lighting industry. Studio Catoir were given carte blanche with the design and aesthetic of the apartment, keeping in mind the warm summers and bitterly cold winters. All of the loose furniture and built in furniture is by Studio Catoir, much of it bespoke, with many other elements – such as fireplaces, joinery and carpets – also made to measure.
The result is a highly crafted interior, full of character and personality, with playful touches and retro influences in select parts of the apartment. Vibrant yellows and winter blues make repeated appearances, lending the duplex a fresh individuality, while texture and pattern are used sparingly but to great effect. A planted roof terrace forms an outdoor room with views of the peaks in the distance.
Switched on: a home bursting with playful colour and idiosyncratic details was the perfect choice for this lighting guru;
