Artificial Intuition

The work “Artificial Intuition” is a kinetic sculpture that interacts with motions. Sensors and motors equipped on this installation enable robotic tentacles to keep following people when they pass by. Powered by robotic motors, artificial tentacles start to wobble and scratch when the audience stand

s still. Therefore, the machine becomes an aggressive creature with trembling vines. With the shadow of the tentacles, it enhances the presence of a living thing.

Installed in a corridor space, this work allows audiences to walk through intuitively. Some audiences are afraid of the tentacles and they would find ways to escape. While others enjoy touching or interacting with the tentacles physically.

“Artificial Intuition” plays with the tension between animated movements and rationalised methods of a robotic machine. By comparing human emotion to machine glitch, The work helps people find the connections between human and machine, intuition and rationality.
