Kosuke Araki
Eyes on Talents member, Kosuke Araki, exhibited his work at Homo Faber 2024: The Journey of Life last September. This was the third edition of the biennial, a celebration of contemporary craftsmanship in Venice curated by the Michelangelo Foundation for Creativity and Craftsmanship. A total of 800 examples of contemporary craftsmanship by around 400 individuals or studios from all over the world, were on show. Kosuke Araki presented ten Anima pieces newly created for the occasion. Anima is a series of tableware handcrafted from food waste and urushi, or Japanese lacquer, made to encourage us to rethink our relationship with nature.
Kosuke Araki is a designer and self-taught artisan who works and lives in Tokyo. After studying product design in Tokyo and London, he decided to further develop his graduation work entitled Food Waste Ware, a conceptual tableware addressing the issues of food waste. Sensing that his work could evolve through Japanese lacquer, he devoted time and effort to developing his skills, opening his own workshop and officially introducing Anima in 2018. His Anima collection has been acquired by the V&A, MoMA and CID Grand Hornu.
