Tarrah Krajnak

Jury Award

Tarrah Krajnak is the winner of the Jury Award of the Prix Découverte Louis Roederer 2021. Her series is consecrated to North American "master", Edward Weston, it is a sequel to her first critical homage to Ansel Adams. The artist re-enacts the famous Nudes. She takes the place of models Bertha Wardell and Charis Wilson, reproducing their poses. She restores to the picture what Weston left outside the frame and emphasizes Weston’s framing choices, what he excluded, using simple wooden panels. Tarrah Krajnak replays a significant chapter in the history of photography while re-focusing on the role of the female model. Through this performative and photographic act, Krajnak affirms her Latin-American identity and her body of color.

Public Award

Ilanit Illouz is the winner of the Public Award of the Prix Découverte Louis Roederer 2021. "Wadi Qelt, dans la clareté des pierres" is based on extensive research into the natural elements and proposes an experimental photographic study of Wadi Qelt, a valley situated in the Judaean Desert between Jerusalem and Jericho, near the Dead Sea. The dramatic desiccation of the lake has transformed the region into a lunar zone, corroded by salt. The artist collects this salt from the desert floor and then, in her studio, uses it to fossilize her prints, lending them a sculptural quality. Both image and structural component at once, the salt solidifies the work and makes it scintillate, revealing the organic properties of the mineral, but also its hieratic beauty, evoking a landscape for contemplation but also a threatened ecosystem.

Prix Caritas Photo Sociale

Victorine Alisse and JS Saia, co-authors of the photographic series “Au grand air” are the winners of the second edition of the Prix Caritas Photo Sociale. Created by the Réseau Caritas France it supports and encourages photographers who work on the issues of poverty, precariousness and exclusion in France. Victorine and JS met over coffee thanks to the association La Cloche dedicated to creating social ties and changing views on life on the street. Victorine began by following JS in places that are part of his story: from the parc de Bercy in Paris, where he arrived in 2015, to the bois de Vincennes where he has lived ever since. Their photographic series “Au grand air” resembles a dialogue in which they tell and confront their visions. These photographs become an attempt to break the prejudices on a way of life often considered marginal and unthinkable.

Prix Elysée

Kurt Tong, Hong Kong born photographer, won the fourth edition of the Prix Elysée for his project Dear Franklin. The Prix Elysée is organized by the Musée de l’Elysée, a museum based in Lausanne (Switzerland) entirely dedicated to photography. Having grown up in the United Kingdom, his work revolves around exploring his Chinese roots, his upbringing and understanding of his motherland. Three years ago, Kurt Tong was given an old wooden trunk after the death of a friend’s neighbour. The outside was sealed by a taoist seal, and inside were a number of hand written letters, old photographs, numerous books from the 1920s, all belonging to a man called Franklin Lung. Through his story emerges very current themes like social mobility, migration, tragedy and people risking it all for better opportunities.
