foreword

i want to make public the fact that this book is its second version. on september 2010 my beloved work had been taken - or disappeared - from the premises of the ied school. both, the project evaluating company - hoss, and ied, had renounced to the blame for the loss. ied offered to replace the book by reprinting what ever material was available on disk. all handmade artwork is lost. in order to compensate for lost time and material i have added some prints that have originally not been presented as part of the project but add to the theme in question. i believe that this work has fulfilled its inherent purpose by having been taken - to demonstrate precisely that - the essence of humans as described within. on a second note this work, and entire year project would not have been possible without many people. due thanks are in order. to Madam Kanai, who deposited twelve thousand dollars in a bank account so my student visa could be granted from japan; canada mbna who lent four thousand dollars that covered the registration fees at ied; MOM, who did not retire that year and continues waiting on tables so i could take advantage of this opportunity; to MASAKAZU, who stayed behind lugging wood in order to help me get ahead; new friends maria and her husband that spent time on my mac hacking photoshop and illustrator so i could do my school work. raul who took me in, and hosted me along with his flat-mate flavio, and became the door to madrid. collaborators who generously contributed to this project with materials, matsui inks japan, cestisa, elizabeth, eduardo, cesar, and louise bernard from mohair weavers south africa. and finally, ied for awarding me this 1 year study grant; davis and his team at i mac store who spent an entire saturday with me trying to recover my project file from a suddenly crashed, and no longer working mac - 2 days before project was due.

many thanks.

presentation panels and antique obi which work was based on.

the silent language a japanese obi is a woven belt done with extreme patience and care. each obi is unique and there are never two alike. the prints that decorate the obi usually tell a story, illustrate or represent something in particular. a professor of mine once said that a pattern transmits a feeling but not a meaning. i didn’t quite agree with her so, i started investigating the essence behind patterns. moreover, the origin of pattern in itself, and the reason for man to illustrate and decorate a fabric or himself. In my still short study I have seen the following, that not only there is lots of meaning behind the intent of pattern but also a need for it to be a means of communication and a form of language in itself. i took the obi as basis to this work and its width its first guideline. hence the width of the theme panels. the obi that inspired this work depicts a stream of water and represents the passing of time. on the stream japanese maple leaves float with the current, representing the necessity to adapt to the force that carries one and learn not to fight it but in patience and beauty learn to let it be. runs within is a conclusion that our essence is driven by our inner force and thus will carry us to our personal peace.
