Parsons Designer, Ji Min Lee Shows A Boundary Pushing Collection

New York Fashion Week can feel stale with the humdrum of usual suspects walking precisely marketed, otherwise safe collections. That is why Parsons School of Design is here to bring us new perspectives from savvy and daring students. Parsons MFA designer Ji Min Lee’s “Female Gaze” collection stood ou

t prominently to our editors. Although only seven looks, the collection proposed more new ideas than many hundred look collections we’ve seen.

Bold subversive cuts, sharp tailoring, and decorated sheer underpinnings sustain the structure of the men’s silhouette and proposes to strip it of power. Men’s suiting through the female lens. Pant legs walk as decorative pieces, the two piece suit is reimagined as a single mended coat.

Ji Min Lee has found a delicate, unique sensibility in suiting where there has long been associations with power, masculinity, and conformity. Explore the collection below. Images courtesy of Ji Min Lee.

parsons’s mfa class of 2019 shows us the future of fashion

Ji Min Lee

What is the inspiration behind this collection?
I am fascinated with the idea of male beauty, so I used this collection to showcase that through exoticism, sexuality, and the naked truth.

How has your culture impacted your passion for your work?
I come from a conse

rvative Korean culture where women’s sexual desires are repressed however when I moved to NY, I found the freedom to express myself and my deepest desires, which led me to manifest my desires through the male gaze.

What’s next for you after graduation?
I want to continue my work in exploring the beauty of males with different subjects. I’m a bit under pressure to find work, but I want to stay in NYC and continue working with different brands and people.

The Parsons MFA Spring 2020 Runway Show Was All About Experimental Tailoring

Then there was the Ji Min Lee, who sent deconstructed men’s suits down the runway, with jackets and pants that had random arms and legs missing, revealing the models’ fleshy body parts, with mesh fabrics that had dangly trim pieces in their place. It seemed like a commentary on the state of manhood a

nd the rigidity of men’s traditional dressing, and perhaps their emotions, too. Interestingly, the collection was inspired by the “female gaze” according to the university.
