Inès Bressand's approach is based on materials and collaborations with makers. With them, she develops new ways of working, a step away from tradition, aiming to produce new pieces in a cross-fertilization process. Her most representative works are a collection of straw baskets made with weavers in G


hana - selected for the 2018 Festival of Hyères Accessories Prize - and a series of furniture marrying wood and galvanized metal for the Botswana based brand MABEO. Beside working on her collaborative projects in Marseille, France, she is regularly in Africa as a freelance designer.

Inès Bressand Is Crafting the Basket Bags You’ll Be Coveting This Spring

The genesis of Inès Bressand’s eponymous accessories label was swift and organic. Her background is in textile and social design; while she was researching for her master’s thesis, she discovered the art of basket weaving in Europe and later, Africa. Bressand spent three months with artisans in Ghana


learning how to create sculptural baskets using a naturally golden straw from the savannah called elephant grass. That’s where her first collection of bags, called Akamae (named for one of the weavers), was born.

Southern African wood and galvanised metal combine in furniture by Mabeo

Botswanan brand Mabeo has launched three new collections of furniture made using wood and waste metal from the local construction industry.

The brand, which works with southern African craftspeople and materials, recruited three international designers for the new collections. Garth Roberts from C
