RETURNING TO NATURE:
03
INSPIRATION
•
followers of SHUGENDO - combining aspects of mountain worship, Buddhism, Shintoism and Taoism.
•
began in the 8th or 9th century - grew in popularity in the Edo Period (1603-1868) as a pilgrimage route for spiritual rebirth.
•
pursuing enlightenment through communion with the natural world and the supernatural forces running through it.
UNIFORM
03
INSPIRATION
•
UNIFORM: straw sandles, Buddhist rosary beads, robes of various hues (white, saffron, tan, blue, sometimes checkered), sometimes a conical hat made of woven wood slats, and other times a black pillbox cap that serves as both protection and a drinking cup. Almost all of them carry walking sticks to ensure balance in the rugged terrain.
•
designed to resemble robes worn by the dead. By donning the garments, you symbolically given up your worldly impurities and are now to travel the 3 holy mountains of Dewa Sanzan, in order to be spiritually reborn.
